One solution employed at Kinabatangan is the use of artificial nesting holes – they look fairly unattractive in my eyes but seem to be accepted by Rhinoceros Hornbills. Apparently, a single team of traditional dancers uses about 400 rhinoceros hornbill feathers, which involves killing 40 birds ( source ).

They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.
