The slaughter tourism trade in Serbia

In all European Union countries to the north and east of Serbia (except Romania), Turtle Doves are strictly protected. Money and effort are being invested in that protection. The cargo consisted of huge number of protected passerines such as larks and pipits, beside huntable species like Common Quails and Turtle Doves.

The Great Bustard Search is On (1)

What remains of their range is currently protected as the Pastures of Great Bustard Special Nature Reserve, but in the last several years there are only a dozen birds left, and only one adult male among them. Not the strictly protected bustards, but Red Foxes, Brown Hares, Pheasants , as well as Hooded Crows and Rooks.

On the second day of that visit, the wardens suggested to try the “Forgotten” Road, once the main road to Romania, but today, after a dozen tunnels and a new riverbank road were constructed four decades ago, merely a track of a derelict and crumbling tarmac winding over a mountain pass. Once upon a time, this narrow forest track was the main international road to Romania, but, back then, Romania was a country behind the curtain and perhaps there wasn’t that much traffic? Not a falcon, but a female Eurasian Sparrowhawk , drying its soaked feathers after the rain that was falling while we were protected by the trees.

Where to Watch Birds in the Iron Gates

Even among the protected areas of Serbia, the Iron Gates National Park (in Serbian: Djerdap) stands out as better preserved. Keep in mind that the special nature reserves (dark green on the park map) enjoy the highest level of protection and are off limits to visitors (possible only with research permits issued by the park authorities).

Where to See Kiwi (and other birds) During the Rugby World Cup

Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. If you do decide to give your liver a rest then rest assured there are birds to be seen here.

The Common Pochard is not just a scarce breeding bird, but the second most numerous wintering duck in Serbia and it will be a hard battle to protect it against the strong hunting lobby. They do breed in the Balkans, in Montenegro and Greece where I observed them, as well as in Bulgaria and Romania. Common Pochard Aythya ferina.
