Because many NWRs were established to protect migrating birds, they lie along one of the four primary flyways. It’s not just for the birds.

I’ve been on a whale-watching trip in Orange County , twice gone out to Santa Cruz Island , and even visited Protection Island off the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. That would be the Northern Gannet that has made the rocky coast near San Francisco its home for the last four years.
