However, my latest trip reminded me that when an out-of-town birder arrives in a strange city (in this case San Francisco ) pertinent information should be to hand. Black Oyster-catchers will usually be found on the rocks too, but this morning each of these species gave their best views in the receding waves.

BLM land is particularly important for conservation of the Greater Sage-Grouse and other sageland species. NPS also manages a diverse set of lands ( i.e., from the Arctic to the Everglades to the Mojave Desert to the Rocky Mountains ) that are used by many species of birds. Additionally, many federal lands have further protections.

San Francisco averages two-tenths of an inch for the month, while San Jose only averages half that much. I had set aside the morning of Sunday, June 10th to cross the San Francisco Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean town of Half Moon Bay, a mere 25 minute drive away, for a few hours of birding.

Environmental officials believe the plan can be reworked so that the Plovers’ habitat is protected. But sometimes, what’s best for the birds and what’s best for the humans collide.

Individually, many NWRs protect crucial bird habitat. Farallon NWR , a group of islands near San Francisco, hosts the largest colonies of breeding seabirds south of Alaska. But when taken as a whole, the impact of the Refuge System is truly profound, supporting population-level numbers of numerous bird species.

Why this one city alone would be named for birds, in this country of 1,800 species, is unclear, but it could very well be a designation inspired by the nearby Islas Ballestas, an uninhabited island group just offshore from Pisco and home to enormous breeding colonies of Humboldt Penguins , Inca Terns , Peruvian Boobies , and many other species.
