A wonderful variety of bird species are waiting to be seen and among them are many a birder’s favorite avian group, the wood-warblers. Among the most desired bird species during May migration, brightly colored, beautiful and boldly patterned, how can a birder not get hooked on spring warblers? Great Green Macaw!

But this man turned out to have worked with the government habitat protection agency, which is why he stopped when he saw me birding. I think I do a pretty good imitation of several other species, but, unlike the Trogons, they never seem to think the same.). He is also and Evangelical Christian, as I am. (I
Less than 1% of all species exhibit role some type of role reversal where males do what females typically do. From the Amazon basin through the towering Andes to the endemic-rich Choco, it is possible to observe 600 species in two weeks and even 800 in three weeks – they could all find themselves on your life list. Robin Restall is an acclaimed bird artist, whose works include the Helm’s Birds of Northern SouthAmerica (2006).
They migrate through Central America and winter in SouthAmerica, apparently almost entirely east of the Andes. BirdLife International lists them as a Species of Least Concern because of their enormous range and population of approximately 13,000,000 individuals, though the population does seem to be decreasing slightly.
Jacamars live only in the neo-tropical rainforest of SouthAmerica. Here is where the rictal bristles act as a shield protecting the eyes from spiky legs and flapping wings. This is how, many species occupy the same habitat and use seemingly the same foraging strategy. Wikipedia-Creative Commons).
The Andean Flamingo ( Phoenicopterus andinus ) is one of the three flamingos occurring in the high Andes of SouthAmerica. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. They produce an annual newsletter to tell readers the current status of several species.
Baltimore Orioles spend their winters in Florida, Central, and SouthAmerica, and migrate north to breed in much of the Eastern United States. It’s true that many know the bird because of Baltimore’s baseball team, but the species’ history with Maryland goes back much further.

Central American Pygmy-Owl is another key species at the lodge. However, for me, there were birds to be seen. Photo by James Adams.
They packed up in June of 2013 and headed south from San Diego with the southern tip of SouthAmerica as their destination. Geographic patterns of species richness for birds (1,558 species) in East Africa at 0.25° resolution (blue indicates low species richness, while brown indicates high species richness). At the time of writing, Uganda has 16 hotspots with 400+ so far eBirded species, of which one has almost 600 species.
If a list also shows the status for each species, birders on their way to Costa Rica would realize that they shouldn’t really expect vireos with white eyes nor blue heads (but would hopefully know that they should very much report those species on eBird so local birders can chase them!). Toucan species with new names.
Plus, there was once a time when I couldn’t tell a tern from a gull, let alone differentiate between species. Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from SouthAmerica to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). The added publicity – the bird now appears on Aruba currency and stamps – will draw attention to needed conservation and protection efforts. These owls use the tunnels of other species as their nesting burrows, and so can be found associated with ground squirrels, tortoises, and prairie dogs.
And, I started daydreaming about encountering something a little different, maybe a Horned Frog, Ceratophrys cornuta, a large, squat green and brown frog of SouthAmerica, with a wide mouth large enough to eat other frogs as well as reptiles. Diversity of habitat means, of course, great biodiversity, and the Introduction boasts that Bolivia “is the richest landlocked nation on Earth for bird diversity, the sixth richest overall, and the fifth richest in the Americas” (p. That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! ″ x 9.5″x

The vast majority of Baltimore Orioles that breed in North America return to the tropics between Mexico and northern SouthAmerica for the cold half of the year.
