In a co-ordinated protest, members of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) destroyed hundreds of traps and set free the birds inside. The hunting and selling of ortolans, which have suffered a Europe-wide decline of 40-50% in the last 40 years, has been illegal in France since 1999. From the Guardian.

I think this is why I understand the thinking of people who don't want us to use animals but who promote changing the way we use them to decrease their numbers or their suffering. I understand the impulse to do " something " that alters the number of animals created to be used and killed and the suffering of the ones created.

Today it is a different situation, i learned from then about respecting animals and my life has been devoted to ending their suffering and torment. Thinking back still touch's me to the point where I feel so guilty-but I knew no different.

As I have suggested above, vegetarianism may have a protest or symbolic function. It might be suggested that although becoming a vegetarian as a protest against animal suffering or a way of committing oneself to helping the hungry people of the world is not a moral duty, it is still a moral act; it is a supererogatory act.

I know on some level, I think that’s something almost all of us can get behind…no one, except the most callous and cold-hearted of the human race things its fine to torture animals, or deny that they are capable of pain and suffering. Albatross chicks will no longer have to endure slowly getting eaten alive, unlike this poor bird.

My first ‘protest’ memory involved putting pencil to notebook paper and writing the President about the harmful effects of DDT. Terrestrial animals could drown; will not be able to access the necessary ranges; be trapped; suffer diminished genetic diversity; and possibly become extirpated and/or extinct. Public lands at risk.
