On our first morning after breakfast, my group and the teens piled onto a boat and headed out to Eastern Egg Rock, once again the breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins (as well as a host of other seabirds) thanks to biologist Dr. Stephen Kress. Puffins growl like chainsaws, and one in Britain was seen carrying 62 fish in her beak.

The hotel owner told us that visiting them in the evening had the best showing of puffins as they returned to the cliffs from the sea. Thankfully the Puffins and Razorbills (arguably the most photogenic species) perch on the uppermost ledges, making them readily available for close-ups.

The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. Horned Puffin. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. This turned out to be much harder that I had hoped, but I did manage to get a few decent images. Common Redpoll. Emperor Goose.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was any of the five Atlantic Puffins he saw on Eastern Egg Rock off the coast of Maine. Instead, I lucked into the best sighting I’ve ever had of a male Mourning Warbler in the same spot. He’ll be sure to share pictures once he’s back home and has access to his computer again.

No Atlantic Puffins , no Dovekies , no Thick-billed Murres ! Don’t get me wrong, those birds are cool birds, but when you are out in a boat for twelve hours specifically searching for alcids and you only get two of the five species you would expect in New York it is kind of disappointing. The auks, which range from puffins to guillemots all the way to the tiny auklets and murrelets, are typical for seabirds, long lived with tiny clutches of one or two eggs. The investment placed in each clutch bur seabirds is so great that only one breeding attempt can be seen to completion each year.
