Once I stepped out of the car the sightings piled up quickly: Grasshopper Sparrow , American Kestrel , Savannah Sparrow , Willow Flycatcher , Eastern Meadowlark. And then, only a few yards away, a Henslow’s Sparrow was found singing as well. The sweet song of Eastern Meadowlarks is pleasant enough.
The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. Gold-crowned Sparrows were found around many of the salmon filled streams. Horned Puffin. Savanah Sparrow. Aleutian Song Sparrow. Gold-crowned Sparrow. Fox Sparrow. The Common Redpoll was a fun find for me. Common Redpoll. Emperor Goose.

I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. And, I love that some subspecies get their own range maps (Fox Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco yes, White-breasted Nuthatch and Savannah Sparrow no).

There is no place that compares to Maine with its rocky shorelines, freezing waters populated by wintering alcids, offshore islands filled with nesting Atlantic Puffins, mixed and boreal forests (the most forested state in the U.S., So, expect to find warblers before sparrows if you are browsing.
Other specialties include Bobolink , Sandhill Crane , Black Tern , Pinyon Jay , Juniper Titmouse , Bohemian Waxwing (rare) , Northern Shrike , Black-backed Woodpecker and American Tree Sparrow. Donna was first amongst beats to reach North Dakota and brought the number of Lower 48s to 32, adding Sharp-tailed Grouse , Sprague’s Pipit and LeConte’s Sparrow to the life list.
