Species with a world population in the hundreds tend to be endangered or critically endangered and confined to remote and difficult to reach locations. This became particularly true when a pair, Puffin and T2, where moved to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary , or Zealandia, in Wellington.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

Views like this offer specialty niches for many high-altitude species. These White-tailed Ptarmigan are without a doubt one of the most sought-after species in Colorado. The huffin’ and puffin’ is always worth it in the end, however. This species is an athletic and patient one.

At Dunnet Head, we got to see a couple of Atlantic Puffins, a few Razorbills, some Guillemots and gulls. Hundreds of Black-headed Gulls, Greater Black-backed Gulls , Mew Gulls , and Fulmars , thousands of Razorbills , 60-70 Puffins , and literally tens of thousands of Guillemots. Total Scotland Species – 105.
