And I will continue my quest to see all of my Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding too. Naturally, a walk through one’s life lists triggers memories.

I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles. I still have that marker.

This became particularly true when a pair, Puffin and T2, where moved to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary , or Zealandia, in Wellington. And while Takahe ( Porphyrio hochstetteri ) are both endangered and generally confined to remote and difficult to reach areas, there are some in more accessible locations.

At Dunnet Head, we got to see a couple of Atlantic Puffins, a few Razorbills, some Guillemots and gulls. Hundreds of Black-headed Gulls, Greater Black-backed Gulls , Mew Gulls , and Fulmars , thousands of Razorbills , 60-70 Puffins , and literally tens of thousands of Guillemots. Flying in formation.
