A false pregnancy is a term used to describe a female dog showing signs of pregnancy, lactation and nursing, but never produces any puppies. She may try to create a nest to keep her puppies in. She will carry these objects around and mother them as if they were her puppies.

One day while I was volunteering I met a little pit bull puppy who was recovering from a spaying. The puppy seemed too thin to me so I asked about her story. All eight of the puppies were in foster care. Very sweet and gentle animal (I have a soft spot for pits.and pugs!) Someone had called in an animal cruelty report.

Some people are seeking purebred animals or puppies and think these are not available in shelters. Often these puppies or kittens are not placed in homes, and end up in the shelter. Puppies are great but often people are much happier getting a dog who is older, and whose size and temperament is a known quantity.

Most shelter animals are spayed or neutered, have been treated for worms, and have at least their first set of shots. If you’re not willing to go through the trials of house-training a young puppy or kitten, opting for an older shelter animal is an easy option.

Poor countries with lots of trash on the streets and no spay/neuter clinics definitely have more street dogs. You prevent that dog from producing puppies, and those puppies from producing puppies, and on and on for centuries maybe. Street dogs aren’t someone else’s problem. Yup, I was rescued in Africa.
