The invasive Burmese Python ( Python molurus ) is well established in the Florida Everglade. Another species of Python, the African Python ( Python sebae ) has established a small population in the 2,877-acre Bird Drive Area (BDA) in South Florida. The best chance to catch a Python is during a cold front.

For some bizarre reason (hopefully just ignorance), Reese Witherspoon has pissed off animal rights activists by purchasing and carrying around a purse made out of python skin. Python skinning is horrible, brutal and repulsive. And it's illegal for her to have it at least in the State of California. And she paid $4,000 for it.

But, to paraphrase Monty Python, every species is sacred. Even if you wouldn’t shed too many tears to lose a seemingly superfluous species, the threat of habitat loss to wildlife is a global concern that imperils migratory and resident species alike. Conservation of migratory species must be an international affair.

For those of you that miss me mentioning some of the other wildlife around Broome I think I should mention the Black-headed Python we also saw last week! Black-headed Python measuring. Black-headed Pythons are only in the north of Australia. The snake had sadly been hit by a vehicle and was off the edge of the highway.

If you want to know what happened on August 31, 1984, I can name at least one event: In the Padang-Sugihan Wildlife Reserve in South Sumatra province, a Large Frogmouth was mobbed by a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, as described here. He was also nearly strangled by a pet python that he kept. At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact.
