It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead. Hawks (or Merlins like the above bird eating a Red-bellied Woodpecker) come to feeders but they would be killing birds whether there is a feeder or not. I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead. I don’t deny that feeders can cause bird deaths.
