Since 2006 a pair of Bald Eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) nesting at Turtle Bay in Redding California have successfully raised a dozen eaglets! This year when the pair returned to Turtle Bay, they decided to build a new nest in an adjacent tree.

Presumably, the parents of black drongo chicks sometimes meet with Red-billed Starlings to sympathize with each other about the challenges of raising chicks these days. Black Drongos must be breeding here – this juvenile was terrorizing his parents with constant calls for food.

I’ve been to the Wagbachniederung before (see a previous post ) and it seemed like a good site to visit again, being slightly more easy to reach than the similarly interesting nearby Saalbachniederung when traveling by public transport.

It’s no looker, it may not nest on our roofs or transport our progeny, but its story is far more fascinating than any old wives’ tale. They’re beautiful birds, and an example of the way birds and humans can coexist more or less prosperously for centuries. Here’s to the Wood Stork, then!

Piney Z Lake is separated by Lake Lafayette by another raised berm – this time with no openings for paddlers. I could paddle on the water trail because I not only owned a kayak, but also because I owned a car that could get me to the park – far away from public transportation. So many Americans do not have these privileges.

But, if you have arrived from out of town, with no car and limited time, you need ideas that can easily be achieved from the city centre on public transport.
