Flycatchers in the Cocoa

For the purpose of this post being of a reasonable length, I’m only going to touch on members of the Tyrannidae family of New World Flycatchers which can be found in the cocoa estates of Trinidad and Tobago. There are of course, many other birds which feed on flying insects, such as jacamars and trogons. Yellow-breasted Flycatcher.

Sniping: The Final Frontier?

Out of the approximately 26 species of snipes worldwide, two have been recorded on Trinidad. On Trinidad it took me some more time until I saw my first snipe. If the bird raises its wings, it’s likely flying – and good luck trying to get a good view of a flying snipe! Any snipe is a good snipe, they say.

Quarantine Twitch for the Best Backyard Bird

Sightings in Trinidad have been sporadic, 38 to be exact since the formation of the T&T Bird Status and Distribution Committee. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation! Typical of the species. The last time I had seen a Summer Tanager was during a Christmas Bird Count in 2012.

Found only on the dry islands off Trinidad’s northwest corner, I only scraped together a single miserable attempt to find it – and had not a single view.

Living in Paradise

The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. I refrain from placing a timestamp on the couple hundred yards of gentle descent into Cuffie River, as it is highly likely one may be distracted by one or two Rufous-tailed Jacamars sallying into the roadway, or a Trinidad Motmot observing the observer from the adjacent bamboo.
