We ended with 7 species of mammal, including River Otter, Gray Fox, and Marsh Rabbit, but the highlight may have been a little Canebrake Rattlesnake crossing the road at the Bodie Island lighthouse, a lifer herp for me. But the wilds of Nevada revealed rattlesnakes, lizards (OK, the lizards didn’t seem that dangerous), and more than one mama cow who stared us down when our vehicles got too close to a calf. Also new was a healthy sense of fear for some of the animals we encountered. Not yet, knock on wood.)

They are quite capable of killing and eating the venomous rattlesnakes of this desert region. The primary food source for the roadrunner is insects, lizards, and small snakes, which it gets ahold of and bashes on a rock until dead. Several times I have seen roadrunners fly well over 100 yards from a ridge top to the desert floor.

Rattlesnakes are fair game, as are other reptiles, scorpions, frogs, birds, and insects. These ground birds have been clocked going 20 mph, though their coyote predators can go more than twice that. Their impressive speed is used for hunting, and roadrunners will eat almost anything that moves.

Instead I stumbled upon this little Pigmy Rattlesnake, of the dark Florida barbouri subspecies. Early migrating passerines were in evidence, too, so I walked a short trail into a palm hammock in the hopes I could scare up a feeding flock or something.
