The relevant numbers involving cats, the people that cherish them, and the birds (and small mammals and reptiles) that they kill are all too large to mean much; you might as well use the funny word “gazillions.” Marra and Chris Santella, authors of Cat Wars: The Devastating Consequences of a Cuddly Killer (Princeton University Press, 212 pp.,
I drove out a bit late because of an almost-flat tire that needed attention, and then managed to drive right past the reservoir without seeing it. Sometimes it is a flower (of which there were oodles), a reptile (lizards, and a small snake), or an insect. Not the most auspicious start to my day!

The reptiles in Parque Tomás Garrido were of the crocodilian variety. I’m happy to say that the ones right on the other side of a low wall were not so large. Parque la Pólvora was crawling, literally, with small and large, rather prehistoric-looking, iguanas. I liked their attitude. Some were quite large.
Yes, you read that right, two FREAKING MANGROVE CUCKOOS perched OUT IN THE OPEN! Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! Crocodiles, smockodiles, how bad could it be?

I was practically right next to the two in this photo (and, note the Rufescent Tiger-heron photobomb). Favorite Reptile: Yacare Caiman is one of three species of Caiman we saw, and it gets the number one spot because of this sight. Any suggestions?
I don’t mind that they share the world with other creatures, and I have even developed an appreciation for mammals, reptiles and amphibians – but only so long as watching them doesn’t collide with my finding birds. I am a birder, and I love birds. So what is one to think of the former?

I have occasionally bemoaned the lack of creativity in bird names before, so you would be right to guess that the name of the other species in this genus is Northern White-crowned Shrike.
