At an NYC puppy shelter a few weeks ago, my mind was just about made up when I met Chester – The cutest Lab puppy I’d ever seen. After talking to the owner of the shelter however, I learned there was more to adopting little Chester, or any pet for that matter, than my love at first bark. The Texas Attorney General ruled earlier this month that the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center can withhold records of a committee that oversees the use of animals in training and research. The university also purchased dogs from the shelter up until 2007, Carruth said. I bet there's probably some ugly stuff in those records.

Davis County Animal Shelter, a key supplier to the University of Utah, has already ceased this practice. I wish the whole practice had been outlawed, but at least now shelters can respond to public pressure.
