Getting intimate with a species over the course of the breeding cycle is one of the more rewarding aspects of birding, and field research too.

As his passion for birding grew he decided to travel Latin America; he has spent time in Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and a great deal of time in Brazil. One of his most memorable birding experiences was the six months spent in Northeast Brazil performing research on a new species of bird called the Araripe Manakin.

First published in 1973 in association with the Asa Wright Center, the book focuses on species descriptions, with illustrations grouped together in plates positioned in the center of the book. The AOU has not accepted that split.

Having that in mind, it is no small miracle that Colombia still has 1965 bird species left to be covered by this guide – more than any other country in the world. Among them are 94 endemics and 101 near-endemics, 4 introduced species and only 42 vagrants. Neither have I.)
