I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans. And of course that premise is only possible because the animals (and everything else on the planet) are our "resources." That depends largely on us, our priorities, and our allocation of resources.

If you believe your dog has a right to a life free of torture and slaughter for no reason, then you really ought to think about extending that right to mice, rats, chickens and fish. And I don't see how they further our goal of getting humans to realize that nonhumans are not resources for them to exploit.

I long for the realistic hope that one second will pass without torture and slaughter and enslavement, and I know perfectly well that that second, despite Earth Days and Earth Hours and Meat-Free Days, isn't going to happen. I rescue, I adopt, I do TNR, and I connect others to resources to do the same. People are simply too selfish.

In 2004 – more than 20 years later – the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) had to sue EPA in order to get them to do anything about it. See the website for a self-congratulatory description of their efforts to plant trees, but no mention of their slaughter of the birds who might want to land on them.

It is a very interesting read, and as I stated in the post I wrote on my blog , part of the team that wrote the plan is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, one of the states proposing a Sandhill Crane slaughter.
