Depending on the time of year, other alcids to expect include Pigeon Guillemots, Common Murres , Rhinoceros Auklets and Cassin’s Auklets. This is the Santa Cruz Island Rufous-crowned Sparrow , a subspecies endemic to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands. Never have I seen so many Rufous-crowned Sparrows, they are thick out here.

Gold-crowned Sparrows were found around many of the salmon filled streams. Savanah Sparrow. Rhinoceros Auklet. Aleutian Song Sparrow. Gold-crowned Sparrow. Fox Sparrow. On one of the northwest headlands, I was able to find several American Pipits. My first Pacific Wrens turned out to be quite photogenic.

The attractive Gray-breasted Spurfowl is endemic to the Serengeti ecosystem The unique, blue-eyed Rufous-tailed Weaver forms an ancient link between weavers and sparrows and is also endemic to the Serengeti ecosystem Tarangire National Park – lies to the south of the Serengeti and is a 1,100 square mile reserve centered on the Tarangire River.

The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. Both trips combined, I was away for 22 days, my longest birding trip ever. Sadly, we weren’t able to join them or the leopard.

After seeing Rhinoceros Auklets and Xantus’s Murrelets on the first half of Sunday’s San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trip, we reached Mexico’s Islas Cornado (Coronado Islands), four rocky islands off the coast of northern Baja California. Duncan, I’m also entertained by your comment!

Europe: Then I spotted an easy and obvious one, the Black-eared Wheatear, while the group climbing the steep hillside found the Rock Nuthatch, as well as the Rock Sparrow , striped, pale and indescribable. It happened once more and I gave up disturbing them further – I have seen what I was here to see.

Donna was first amongst beats to reach North Dakota and brought the number of Lower 48s to 32, adding Sharp-tailed Grouse , Sprague’s Pipit and LeConte’s Sparrow to the life list. LeConte’s Sparrow – Ammodramus leconteii. Baird’s Sparrow – Ammodramus bairdii. Still all mainland though.
