White-tailed Eagles normally take flight silently, yet, while checking some Common Starlings and hoping for Rosy Starlings , I heard a few noisy wing-beats, enough to turn and see a young eagle flying with a wing tag. Hidden from my view, it stood on a nearby tree and if it weren’t for those clumsy beats, I wouldn’t have noticed it.

The name and town of the owner were engraved on a metal tag. The trap had been set in the woods right next to my house. Later Astrid and I met in the woods with shovels and a pickaxe and broke the chain and yanked the trap from the ground. I went home, called the Department of Environmental Conservation, and voiced my outrage.

The three young men returned to their friends, bragged about their exploits, and showed them trophies: metal banding tags, which members of the Pacific Rim Conservation had carefully placed on the albatrosses’ legs in order to keep track of individual birds.
