Di Linh is a town and district in South Vietnam a bit less than 2 hours southwest of Dalat. It is the kind of small place that still offers some living space to birds right in the town – witness this Chestnut-tailed Starling nesting in a lamppost.

yanked the steering wheel to the right, slammed on my brakes, grabbed my binoculars, and threw myself out of the car. Skye wore a long-suffering expression, while Bau-Hien – whose parents had settled in Texas after leaving Vietnam – regarded me with a mixture of fascination and alarm. Soon the girls emerged.
The Alpine Accentor reaches right to the top of the pass at 4500 meters … … while the Rufous-breasted Accentor (like me) seems to have fewer problems breathing at a slightly lower altitude. On Balangshan, two species of accentors similarly utilize different levels of altitude. The Snow Pigeons here are quite shy.
Yes, that's right. Cambodian police confiscated two tons of live snakes and tortoises and arrested two men trying to smuggle the slithering cargo up a river from Cambodia to Vietnam, authorities said Thursday. In Cambodia. Luckily, they were alive and released back into the wild. From the AP last week.
In Africa, our bee-eaters occur from the southern tip of the continent right through to the far north, occupying an incredible range of habitats and niches, from the interior of the deepest rainforests of the Congo to the arid steppes of the Sahel. European Bee-eaters can be found through-out Africa at the right time of year.
To be fair, this post will not focus on them – there will be a separate post on pittas of Southern Vietnam and another on kingfishers. Its range as indicated in the HBW is extremely small – just a few spots in Southern Vietnam and a little bit of Cambodia – and it is listed as Near Threatened.
It starts with the sentence “Noomi wakes up early on Sunday morning because her right ear hurts with a dull, regular pulse.” Similarly, a story titled “Call of the Greater Coucal ” published by Middlebury College Publications is also inaccessible to me, so I cannot comment on its literary or ornithological merit.
It inhabits rather dry areas within a region notorious for being one of the rainiest parts of the world, and is thus patchily distributed from Burma through Laos, Cambodia, parts of Thailand and south China, all the way to Vietnam. Then there is a gap of around 2,000 km (or 1,200 miles). Surprise, surprise.
Nonggang is a rural place in Guangxi with a nice landscape somewhat reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam (well, it is not too far away). It is listed as Vulnerable, as its range is rather restricted, though it has been found outside of China as well, e.g., in Vietnam, though the HBW does not seem to have read that paper yet.
Napo is a county in the West of Guangxi, bordering both Yunnan and Vietnam. It is about 3 hours by car from Nanning airport, which in turn can be reached from Shanghai in a 2.5-hour hour flight.
The White Wagtail Motacilla alba , or the taxonomic entity formerly known as “White Wagtail”, comprises a complex of 9 differently-looking forms which have some white in their plumage, wag their tail and inhabit all of Eurasia from eastern Greenland and Morocco to western-most Alaska and northern Vietnam.
If I pay my taxes during the Vietnam war, does this mean I am tacitly supporting the war? But so could lots of other things: wearing an animal rights button, picketing meat-packing houses, and so on. It is certainly not clear what one gives one’s tacit consent to in following a practice. Certainly not. What if I don’t eat meat?
The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. In 1974 we shipped four times as much food to Cambodia and South Vietnam as to starving Bangladesh and Swahelian Africa.
For the Chinese New Year 2022 holidays, my girlfriend and I decided to visit the remote areas of Guangxi in the South of China, at the border to Vietnam. I asked myself while I was in the taxi on my way to the airport.
