After the castle we wound our way through the Black Forest where we were able to watch a pair of Eurasian Three-toed Woodpeckers foraged a few feet in front of us. My only thought of why it took me over two minutes to see it right in front of me can only be attributed to light-headedness from the high altitude.

It was right on the curb and I was concerned about it getting run over. This little guy appeared weak and the wound on its head is very apparent. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.

One of the rangers at the refuge had some photos showing an injury on the bird’s breast, likely from a gunshot wound as the refuge is a popular site for waterfowl hunting, including hunting the thousands of Tundra Swans in the area. The next day I came upon two swans right where they were supposed to be. I guess so.
