On the second day of that visit, the wardens suggested to try the “Forgotten” Road, once the main road to Romania, but today, after a dozen tunnels and a new riverbank road were constructed four decades ago, merely a track of a derelict and crumbling tarmac winding over a mountain pass. Hopefully, something may have changed in the meantime.

In all European Union countries to the north and east of Serbia (except Romania), Turtle Doves are strictly protected. Since this spring’s revision of the European Red List, the Turtle Dove is listed as a vulnerable species. Money and effort are being invested in that protection. Then comes summer and the birds start migrating.

They do breed in the Balkans, in Montenegro and Greece where I observed them, as well as in Bulgaria and Romania. In my native Serbia, pelicans are only vagrants, although in the under-birded southeast, they may be more common than we think. Dalmatian Pelican by Sebastian Bugariu.
