The animals were still bred and raised for slaughter, but evidently in some kind of soulful way we don't really hear about. In " Food for the Soul ," Kristof once again yearns for the farm of his childhood which, for him, had "soul." What that means is that it wasn't a factory-farm operation. I'm not sure how that equals soul.

I'd say no argument here if this were some kind of sanctuary situation, and the animals were in need of a loving home for the rest of their lives. Yes, I do think it's better to have lived a comfortable life and then be slaughtered than to have been tortured the entire time and then be slaughtered.

For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. One of the most important things about Deb's blog, Invisible Voices , is that many of the fortunate animals who end up at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary , where she volunteers, came from family farms. When it's put that way, doesn't it sound silly?

I'd love to say that this was Engber's epiphany, and that he fought for Clayton's removal to a sanctuary and is now a powerful voice against the vivisection of sentient nonhumans. (I discovered later that he'd been separated from his old cage-mate Duper for fighting.) But that's now what happened. It does not make them more or less a "tool."
