Welfare officers from international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary have reported an improvement in the welfare of donkeys and other equines at this year’s Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria, which finished earlier this week.
She verified the bird’s identity and told me that the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores, Florida was one of the few places equipped to handle this species. After the bird had been stabilized, I needed to decide what my next step was. I called Dr. Erica Miller from Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research in Delaware for some advice.
One of those is vet bills, which of course aren't deductible, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't know the total. I'm doing my best in an imperfect world to respect the rights of other sentients, and I have heard vegans say that sanctuaries--and not pet ownership--will be the only way out of subjugation for cats and dogs.
Growing up, I’d wanted to be a vet, but in my twenties I felt called to seminary. I looked out at the half-empty sanctuary one Sunday and thought, Lord, what can I do to get people as excited as I am about coming to church? Sometimes, though, I wonder if the seed wasn’t planted earlier.
First the news, in case you haven't heard: Animal Acres in Los Angeles now has a blog by Philip called Vegan Sanctuary. I placed her in one of my injured wildlife boxes and drive the couple of miles to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. Looks like she did it for us," said the vet. Check it out!
If you don’t yet have a vet lined up in your new town, ask your current provider for recommendations. Provide your pet a safe and quiet sanctuary while the movers shuffle in and out of your house. It’s also a good idea to have your pet’s nails trimmed to avoid damage to your car’s upholstery.

Here’s an idea: find out if there’s a wildlife center or nature sanctuary near you. Call your vet and ask who takes care of injured local wildlife. If you send something, you’re rolling the dice as to whether or not it will arrive on time. What to do? Google the name of your town, followed by “wildlife rehabilitator.”
