Maybe Floridians will then use the scientific name cafer – though with its origin in the terms Kaffir, Caffre, or Caffer applied to some indigenous peoples in South Africa (HBW), this may not be a good choice either. At least in the German language, the term “Kaffer” is a derogatory term for dark-skinned people.

The Lilac-breasted Roller is the national bird of Kenya, but of course, this does not help it pay its bills in South Africa. .” The Latin species name caudatus does not really mean much – just that it has a tail. Strangely, the Latin name of the Hair-crested Drongo is Dicrurus hottentottus – Hottentot is a name previously given to the Khoikhoi, a nomad pastoral people of Namibia and South Africa, far away from where this drongo lives. So much for this post’s pseudo-philosophical thought.
