Key West Wildlife Center takes mostly birds, but will rescue mammals, marine mammals, and both land and sea turtles as well. They kept the hawk for a few days, as he was weak and dehydrated from migration, then released him as well. Last year, 4,000 young Peregrine Falcons swept through the Keys on their way north.

The Arctic blast that has affected most of the country has forced more than two dozen green sea turtles to take shelter after being rescued January 6 from the Mosquito Lagoon by wildlife rangers. This influx of turtles gives the park’s Sea Turtle Rescue Program more than 1,000 turtles rescued since its inception in 1980.

Seems odd, although officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said that fish they've tested have not been killed by oil, but a lack of oxygen in the water. They also say low oxygen levels are common this time of year due to changes in temperature.

Sea turtles can be seen from the beach or while snorkling at Tamarindo Beach, especially if you go early in the morning. There are a variety of lizards on the island, including some huge iguanas in the mangroves but I saw no snakes despite the fact that Isla Culebra means “Snake Island.”

They always nest from the end of June and they always nest in the same place or within a few metres if there is disturbance around the breeding territory.

I have observed Pied Oystercatchers breeding in an area on Cable Beach since July 2000. The birds have moved the nest site slightly each year depending on human interaction, but it is still confined to one small section of grey rocky outcrops with a great view for sitting for 28 days.
