Not only did we observe the bird species most days, but we also had the privilege of observing them at a nest. Oriental Pied Hornbills are quite strange in their nesting habits, because the female bird is sealed into a tree trunk during the incubation of the eggs.

The magnificent view from the Cliff House includes the Seal Rocks just offshore. With the breeding colony concentrated on one small island this species is vulnerable to a catastrophic weather event. In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).

Guano-covered rocks (called Seal Rocks I am told, but my guess is that a seal would struggle to get up here to bask) just off the beach will probably quickly catch your attention. Black Oyster-catchers will usually be found on the rocks too, but this morning each of these species gave their best views in the receding waves.

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

Although the islands are a cramped home to 18 species of seabird, the dominant and most charismatic of these are the two species of albatross, the Black-footed and Laysan Albatrosses. The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed.
