Guano-covered rocks (called Seal Rocks I am told, but my guess is that a seal would struggle to get up here to bask) just off the beach will probably quickly catch your attention.

In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. For example , fallen figs do not seem to mind catching a ride with Oriental Pied Hornbills.
