Too often there are endless calls to friends of friends, to veterinarians who actually don’t take wildlife, to “animal control experts” who sound so dodgy you’re not sure you want them to know where you live. Animal Help Now is the first nationwide response system for wildlife emergencies.
Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. I did manage to spend a chilly Saturday morning at the Billy Frank Jr.

What I consider to be the best bird of the week came in the arrival at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, a Prairie Warbler. When word of this bird’s discovery came, I was up in Seattle for a Saturday wedding. The bird was discovered hanging out right next to the Visitors Center for the refuge.
The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. This refuge came up as #4 on a recent list of the top 25 National Wildlife Refuges that were featured in a great story here by 10000 Birds own Jason Crotty.
We arrived in Seattle 6 days ago, at 12:30 in the morning, after being on the road, in one form or another since February 1st. We were able to find a very nice RV park, just a couple of miles from one of my all time favourite birding hotspots, Billy Frank Jr, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Back in the US of A!

Now that we have returned to our adopted home of La Paz, Mexico, our bones are starting to thaw out from the trip to chilly Seattle. Last Saturday, I was walking around the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, on a cloudy, gray 28F morning. Here is one of the surprising Wilson’s Warblers.
We will cover nearly 3000 miles driving before we reach Seattle, and our final stop. We had already planned on at least one night in Eugene, and spending a day at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area. Now we are on our way to Seattle, The Billy Frank Jr. Well, I have to admit there have been times when it has seemed like that.
Helpfully, a Massachusetts wildlife biologist quoted in the article recommends standing up to bully turkeys instead of turning tail. And if you’re in the Seattle area during the next few weeks, you can check out Thankskilling the Musical. Perhaps inspired by The Birds , these birds often tend to be aggressive around people.
