This is The Seychelles. They are all recognisable from their families in Africa and are simply referred to by prefixing with “Seychelles” With most species being the only representative of their family, it made identification easy. There were a few other Indian Ocean specialities to bulk up my Seychelles list.

No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Still, there should be no problem with larger species that allow for longer observation time (e.g. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales.

A plan to eradicate an introduced species , the Ring-necked Parakeet , from the Seychelles, a small archipelego in the Indian Ocean, to protect the Seychelles Black Parrot , an endemic and the national bird of Seychelles, is going forward.

African Penguins, or Jackass Penguins as they are sometimes known, are one of those species of penguin you’ll find away from the frozen wastes of Antarctica. Boulders Beach, a popular spot in Cape Town, is the place to see the species, and if the mood takes, swim with them. I didn’t swim, but I may next time.

Today the species is secure on a large number of islands and reserves. Both species had undergone massive declines since the arrival of humans and where in a perilous position in the 1970s. Both species were pushed to the brink but pulled back just in the nick of time. It worked, and the translocated birds were soon breeding.

Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.
