Some birds, reptiles, and sharks have nictitating membranes as well as a few mammals. Some species look particularly creepy when their nictitating membrane is closed. If anyone out there knows of any species that lack a nictitating membrane please let me know in the comments!

Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Sure, you might say that sharks eat people and dolphins don’t, but most sharks don’t eat people, and we can’t rule out the possibility that dolphins are simply better at doing it without getting caught. Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. It was a pelagic trip organized by See Life Paulagics and it was a pretty memorable trip with five species of shearwater, Leach’s Storm-Petrels , Wilson’s Storm-Petrels , a variety of dolphins, some sharks, and a variety of other sea life. Three South Polar Skuas at once!

In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins. In Belize I cruised above reefs few people had ever seen.

Almost any park, even within large cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta, will host such quintessentially common Nearctic species such as Field , Song , Chipping , and White-throated Sparrow in good numbers. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

The ongoing destruction of Nanhui, where the species can frequently be seen on migration, certainly will not help. Judging from the facial expression of this White-shouldered Starling , I would rather not have an annoyed bird of this species as a roommate. The species has reversed sex roles, with the males doing the incubating.
