I first noticed it 3 seasons ago when it showed up in a local farmer’s sheep field. Despite being alone, it appeared to associate with the sheep in much the same way that it might with a flock of its own kind. So who is this enigmatic leader of birds that started as a sheep and now leads flocks across great distances?

The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. In 1954, with stringent controls on the grazing of domestic animals, a herd of 20 Desert Bighorn Sheep were re-introduced and have flourished. The population is now estimated to be at over 500. I guess they were the greeters!

It sounds like a sheep , something even I can remember. I am generally fairly hopeless with regard to Bird ID via sound, which is a reason for me to like the Chinese White-browed Rosefinch. Then, there were Pink-rumped Rosefinches. At least that is what Bella thinks.

Yet, in the late 1970s there still were six colonies with about 40 breeding pairs left, but in the early 1990s only two colonies and 22 pairs persisted (of which only 13 bred in 1991) – five of them in this gorge.
