The views were filled with scrubby, low vegetation, dramatic mountains, sheep herds, and sheep herders. The herders are nomadic groups that move sheep from place to place, staying in brick structures that dot the landscape. We traveled maybe ten miles on the only road before turning back around. Birding was tougher.

I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America.

The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. In 1954, with stringent controls on the grazing of domestic animals, a herd of 20 Desert Bighorn Sheep were re-introduced and have flourished. The population is now estimated to be at over 500. I guess they were the greeters!

It is not unusual to drive by a farm building and see a bunch of Greater Rheas on the farm’s fenced-in pasture next to sheep or goats. Greater Rheas, a species the Germans call Nandu, are very popular in Germany and frequently kept in zoos as well as private enclosures.

One raft of 20+ Mallards swims by the bank, right in front of jackals, careless like if they were just two sheep! They are sitting in the wet grass at the edge of the water, observing the bird movements around them. I am thrilled: this is more than just birding, this is a full-scale safari!
