The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. In 1954, with stringent controls on the grazing of domestic animals, a herd of 20 Desert Bighorn Sheep were re-introduced and have flourished. The population is now estimated to be at over 500. I guess they were the greeters!

Throw in Iberian Pigs, the odd fighting bull and a few flocks of sheep and the similarities are striking. The Portuguese equivalent would be the montado – a very similar landscape of wide-open plains and scattered oak trees. The oldest dog, Max, is 17, while the oldest horse, Prince is 36.
