I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. For some reason my son is absolutely into fish, and the duck pond might hold ducks of various species and sorts and shapes and colours, and pink flamingos too. And I am forced to face my fears once more.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. We have a lot of source material.
