It is a common bird of humid, lowland forest in Central and South America where it is usually found in the lower storey. cabanisi group is found in southwest South America and the birds seen in Central America will be from the B.c.cucillivorus group. The Red-crowned Woodpecker is one of several species that are found throughout northern South America and Tobago but are absent from Trinidad. These birds had much smaller bills and were clearly a different species: Rusty-margined Flycatcher I couldn’t even think of going birding anywhere in South America and not see a Roadside Hawk. Lesser Kiskadee A pair of very similar looking birds flew in to confuse things even more.

This striking bird is a strange character and supposedly confused ornithologists for many years even though it was a common sight throughout marshes and open areas in much of South America. I could hardly imagine the frustration, initially it was thought to be a type of mockingbird.

Growing up in South America, I distinctly recall the arrival of “the swallow with a deeply forked tail”. They fly from extreme northern North America to the southern tip of South America and are seldom seen perched during migration. I later learned about the Barn Swallow’s amazing annual migration.

And Chilean Flamingos should be found, well, in Chile, as well as much of southwestern South America. American Flamingos do occur naturally in Mexico, but only on the Yucatán peninsula in the country’s extreme southwest. So both birds are assumed by many to be escapees from a zoo or a private collection somewhere.

The presence of this tanager in the Caribbean is a rare aspect of South American flair, as its closest relative is the similarly plumaged Scrub Tanager of northern South America. Interestingly, this species has been split into two distinct subspecies, one for each of the islands on which it is found.

But the highly social Rufous-crowned Warbler , found from Western Mexico all the way down to northern South America, is one Warbler that really knows how to warble. Its insect-like buzz reminds me most of the Grasshopper’s Sparrow’s song. I love to hear its song in our dry canyons.

It seems to really like the Poro tree, an Erythrina species native to northern South America that has become well established in Costa Rica and used by many native and migrant birds. In the Central Valley, this bird might be somewhat seasonal, or, maybe it just wanders from one area of flowering trees to another.

They packed up in June of 2013 and headed south from San Diego with the southern tip of South America as their destination. The non-breeding distribution is virtually unknown, although they are suspected to winter in northern South America (Howell and Web 1995). Very little is known about this enigmatic species.

Wood-Wrens , birds of the family Henicorhina , are very small wrens of Central and South America that like to live very close to the ground, in dense forest underbrush or elfin forests. The only one that occurs in western Mexico, where I live, is the Gray-breasted Wood-Wren.

Millions of pewees fly over and stop in Costa Rica on their way to and from South America. Eastern Wood-Pewee. The original pewee is one of the migrants that passes through in large numbers. We do hear them say their name and that helps because if not, they can be super tough to separate from the Western Wood-Pewee.
