We saw these birds in Egypt in 1994 and they were just great and Grant saw 5 in Busan, South Korea a few weeks ago, just after I got home to Broome. Hoopoe Upupa Epops With a name like that you would just want to see this bird! It sounds good and it looks good… even a non-birder would be impressed!

They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia. ibis and the eastern B. coromandus.

They do their work at the Seoul National University in South Korea. Byeong-Chun Lee and his team created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that create a red fluorescent gene. Lee was also part of a team that created the first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005. Dogs often are used in research for narcolepsy, certain cancers and blindness.

This is a delicate issue that needs to be handled with sensitivity by leaders in Seoul and Washington, so that the question of beef does not derail the important free-trade agreement with South Korea being considered by Congress. South Korea is a tremendous ally of the United States.

Hoopoe was my Best Bird of the Year despite all the new birds I saw in Busan, South Korea. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species. Pacific Loons by Clare Kines The other Clare, Clare Morton, chose Upupa epops.

Where has the last week gone?! I have walked for miles exploring around this amazing city. I stand out as a foreigner, but even more than that I don’t have a frilly umbrella like the other women! Should I get one? No, I think I will stick with a hat! What I had not realised before we came was how many steps there are in this city!

Well one day this week saw me searching for shorebirds, as there must be some here somewhere that I can get to. There are signs up to explain that there are not many left due to reclamation, industry and pollution along the Nakdong Estuary, but I must be able to find something if I go out on low tide… surely?!

Well, as you read this I will be sitting on an aeroplane heading from Busan to Hong Kong to Sydney… time to go home! I have a day in Sydney with my sister and family and then go home to Broome… hopefully not delayed by the threat of a Qantas baggage handlers strike starting Tuesday morning as I try to fly north-west.

We have also seen them in South Korea now! We also saw the first live record for Australia at the Broome Bird Observatory between 15th & 19th November 2002, which was also male. Submission No 242: Blue-and-white Flycatcher Cyanoptila cyanomelana.

2012 has certainly been a bumper year for me with an estimated year list of around 3,000 species after extensive travels to South Africa, Ethiopia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Russian Far East, United Kingdom, Peru, Guatemala and Panama. It seems to me that the Red-billed Starling is getting more and more common in Shanghai (and apparently also in South Korea, see here ) – not bad given that it is quite an attractive bird.
