On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts.

Just as we met a flock of American Tree Sparrows popped up – not exactly a rarity, but certainly a solid winter bird. A lone American Kestrel perched high above, watching the sparrows speculatively. And, even as the ducks brighten their plumage and the Black-capped Chickadees test out their spring songs, it’s still so cold.

Savannah Sparrows are the most common and I do enjoy their territory song. Each week a new species tried to test the patch for nesting territory. I’m only supposed to document one specific species, but I also note the other birds because in a 4 hour period, I’m lucky if I see the target species for 15 minutes.

Where can I see Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow followed by a fantastic meal ? It’s such a great resource, I can go over woodcreeper songs, test myself to see which vocalizations I still remember from the ridiculously diverse rainforests of Tambopata, Peru. This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl.
