I’m only supposed to document one specific species, but I also note the other birds because in a 4 hour period, I’m lucky if I see the target species for 15 minutes. Savannah Sparrows are the most common and I do enjoy their territory song. Each week a new species tried to test the patch for nesting territory.

On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts.

I tried to get a better idea of what exactly the definition of cuckoo-dove is but am still not very clear about it – Wikipedia only offers the rather formal definition “any of several species of bird in the genera Macropygia , Reinwardtoena, and Turacoena of the pigeon family.” But I may well be wrong.

Like if you feel that seeing a friendly chattering House Sparrow was a good bird, then it indeed was. Just as we met a flock of American Tree Sparrows popped up – not exactly a rarity, but certainly a solid winter bird. A lone American Kestrel perched high above, watching the sparrows speculatively. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. Rufous-crowned Sparrow , 26 August, Eaton Canyon, California (2nd sighting and first in over a decade).
