I’m happy that they’re so aggressive though, because the House Sparrows have, at long last, discovered my feeder, and aggressive Juncos are the only things keeping them in line. Speaking of sparrows (real ones this time) the Juncos have gone from one tag-along Song Sparrow to two.
They are the “clockwork toy” birds according to Sibley , “The Bird That Plays Tag with the Waves” according to Pete Dunne , and The Shorebird Guide points out that Sanderlings are “probably the most widespread shorebird in the world.” Not only are Sanderlings fun to watch they leave cool tracks too.

Not only were there no Ravens to film (I was up at the airport watching a family of Ravens peeling tape off boxes of cargo left outside to load onto the south bound flight) but he found a pair of White-crowned Sparrows. Tim filmed a bird he certainly never expected in the Arctic. But I know one of the birds is in it somewhere.

On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts.
Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. I’m just beginning to use a feeder and am surprised by how quickly the House Sparrows seem to decimate it.
