But in south-west Europe there is a bird that kicks out the sitting tenants and takes over the nest altogether. The White-rumped Swift Apus caffer , a tropical African breeding species, was only discovered breeding in Europe in the 1960s. The swifts arrive, seek the swallows out, find their nests and evict the tenants!

There are few places in the United States where simply driving around can leave you with a list of 30+ species, many of them large and spectacular. There were three burrows, each with a tenant. Birding in Florida is unique in that so much of that state’s plenty is evident even to the casual observer.

Once you get them, they can be very loyal tenants but I always dreaded someone with very little bird knowledge coming in to purchase a Purple Martin house. I figure once a chickadee finds a feeder, it’s a matter of time before other bird species follow them in. Martins are notoriously tricky to attract.

But for those of us in the Americas, the cup runs over with species of Troglodytes. Particularly in the Neotropics where wrens reach their biodiverse zenith with species of varying shades and patterns of brown, gray, and cream , and all with impressive, elaborate, voices and varying attitudes about revealing themselves for desired looks.
