In recent years Indonesia has been competing with the Andes as the region giving rise to the biggest number of undescribed bird species (naturally, all of them endemics).

There is one thing however that makes the Sunda Teal a rather highly desired species, and the name is a bit of a give-away: the species’ magic is in its range. The Sunda Teal is restricted to the region of the Sunda islands, ranging from the southern halves of Sumatra and Borneo through Java and Sulawesi all the way to Timor.

South of this range are several isolated populations, in South Vietnam, the Malay peninsular, Sumatra, Java, Flores, and Timor, an all of them have been assigned subspecies status. This more or less coherent range is occupied by the nominate subspecies pusilla. Then, however, it becomes interesting.
