The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. Powerful Owls are the largest nocturnal bird in Australia and the largest of the owl species. This worked in our favour and we were able to take a few more photos before we had to make a move and get ourselves back to the train station.

Safa Park can be visited in the confidence that you will easily be able to get a train or taxi back to the airport. Many of the common species can be seen here, probably in this order; White-eared Bulbul , Red-vented Bulbul , Eurasian Hoopoe , Purple Sunbird , Graceful Prinia , Indian Roller.

You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. I would advise allowing as much time as possible if you hope to walk all of the trails and to be able to explore the different environments and the many species of birds.

On our trip to New South Wales in June we took the opportunity to return to one of the picturesque bush walks that is not too far from the city and easily reached by public transport. The train station at Hornsby is the start of the walk and there are shops nearby if you need supplies before you head off or on your return.

All apprentice falconers are allowed only 1 of 2 species: American Kestrel or Red-tailed Hawk. All the training with the bird is based on positive reinforcement.

Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. These trains are over 2kms (1 mile) long and over 200 carriages, so we had quite a long wait at the track! Waiting for a long train!

On our recent trip to New South Wales we followed up our walk from Otford train station to Helensburgh train station , through the Royal National Park, with another long walk the next day. Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference.

In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. TRANSPORTATION. Plus, we never stopped finding new and better species, which suggests that this place could compile a highly respectable site list. This species is a Summit Ponds specialty.

As I continued south I stopped at each small jetty to see which species were roosting and the sea was substantially rougher than on my previous visit. I am unsure of the exact species that were present, but there were no doubt Crested Terns among the feeding frenzy. Black-winged Stilt at St Kilda. Feeding frenzy. White-faced Heron.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes! Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck!

The most useful resource we have found for finding a trail to go birding along in the Sydney area is one called “wildwalks” and it is particularly good because it offers a wide range of walks of varying lengths and also using public transport. One unmistakable bird flew across the track and stopped nearby. Male Superb Lyrebird.
