Finding an Asian Openbill in Singapore-second ever record!

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. If the train did not go all of the way then we took a connecting bus or walked.

Powerful Owl in the Royal Botanical Gardens-Sydney

The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. Powerful Owls are the largest nocturnal bird in Australia and the largest of the owl species. This worked in our favour and we were able to take a few more photos before we had to make a move and get ourselves back to the train station.

Other species I was looking forward to as possibilities included Anhingas , Magnificent Frigatebirds , and seeing as the sun was supposed to shine, some raptors soaring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to! The train is tiny, open, narrow-gauge, and only two cars long, but a fun ride nonetheless.

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We encountered several species on different flowering plants including the Wanderer Butterfly. Bell Miner.

Birding Olympic Park Sydney

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. We came to the conclusion that the small loop line that takes you to Olympic Park from Lidcombe is where “old trains go to die”!!

The Rarest Bird I’ve Ever Seen

We managed to get everybody out and onto the transportation only about 45 minutes behind schedule, and as the sun rose over the regions famed White Desert, we were on our way southward. In short, it had to be something really good to get this wagon train to stop. I’m not sure who first put out the alarm. Certainly not mine.
