One of the amazing aspects of Brigantine in late spring is the sheer volume of turtles one can encounter. On a single trip I have seen four species of turtle, which must be my all time high in one day. Happy turtling! They are also easily my favorite species of turtle.

The slaughter tourism trade in Serbia

Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds.

The Magic of Kerkini in May

True, most of our migrant breeding birds start to return in April, but in May even the late arrivals – Turtle Doves, Swifts, Spotted Flycatchers and Nightjars – finally appear. Sadly, though I have seen all four this year, I haven’t managed to find an English Spotted Flycatcher nor Turtle Dove. A Kerkini Turtle Dove.

With 85 species in 6 hours, I’d like to think it was well repaid. Las Mesas is the only place I’ve found for which the Black-chinned Sparrow is a reliable species, but this adorable bird, perhaps my favorite local sparrow, always seemed to position himself with some severe backlighting… until this trip.

I managed to see my first Loggerhead Turtle within the mangroves, an unfortunate soul that became trapped within the maze of roots during an exceptionally high tide and lost its life. I’ll spare you the pictures of the dead sea turtle and instead share something a little brighter. Rufous Crab-Hawk. Maybe another time.
