Of course Africa could not to be left out of the pink weekend so I have researched all African species whose official or alternative names include the word “pink”. This attractive (for a lark anyway) species is restricted to the dry savannah Somali-Maasai biome of north-east Africa (northern Tanzania, Kenya, southern Ethiopia and Somalia).

Still, I did manage to see a decent 65 species in 6 hours, and many of them stayed quite close to me, allowing for some nice photos. The lovely Rufous-capped Warbler is something of a flagship species for this site. I am always down for the day when I get home. But you can often see it at L os Filtros Viejos.

Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. I wasn’t well prepared and dipped just about every target species, but I was in the forest at 1200 m / 4000 ft a.s.l. 200 metres / 650 feet lower, amid fields, hedges and rivers, I was surrounded by Eurasian Golden Orioles , Common Nightingales , even a few threatened European Turtle Doves. On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me. Endemic to the Guianan shield, this species has captivated me since I first laid eyes on a photograph of it. Most notably of which was a pair of Blood-colored Woodpeckers. I had never before seen a Limpkin do this.

Walking north I soon encountered a fresh Flatback Turtle nest from the previous night’s high tide and that should hatch out in about 2 months all going well. The nests have been monitored for some years now so there is now some baseline data on how often the Flatback Turtles nest on Cable Beach and how successful they are.

Turtle-Doves and Red-backed Shrikes were showing particularly well, in the air were both Barn Swallows and, more numerous, Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), junipers were decorated by numerous Bee-eaters, plus European Stonechat and a Corn Bunting. BIRDING SEA WORLD One would expect a marine-themed attraction to deliver some sweet bird species. My best wild bird of Legoland had to be some kind of heron hunting among the turtles and young alligators in a cypress swamp. I obviously didn’t anticipate a pelagic vibe, but even fish hatcheries can offer excellent birding.
