The range of the Pygmy Wren-babbler is rather peculiar as it isn’t pygmy at all, reaching from the foothills of the Himalayas through the southern half of China to the northern half of Myanmar and Vietnam. This more or less coherent range is occupied by the nominate subspecies pusilla. Then, however, it becomes interesting.

From a birder’s perspective however, this is both a shame and a blessing, as I will show below based on my observations of the species on the island of Java in November. The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. The Brown Prinia is an Asian species with a very peculiar range.

As well as being an excellent location to try the local variants of curry (bunny chow is not a curry with rabbit but a curry served in a hollowed out bread loaf – better than it sounds) it’s a good place to pick up a few coastal species. Surprisingly, the chance of a nest being robbed is greater in the forest interior than close to the road, as three of the four predator species listed above (all except the magpie) prefer hunting there.

Interestingly, these juveniles look more similar to another species, the Pale-billed Parrotbill, than the adult babblers – and they sometimes are part of the same flock. Nonggang is a rural place in Guangxi with a nice landscape somewhat reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam (well, it is not too far away). It is listed as Vulnerable, as its range is rather restricted, though it has been found outside of China as well, e.g., in Vietnam, though the HBW does not seem to have read that paper yet.
