Virginia is for Birders

10,000 Birds

It’s southernmost third, given to Virginia by accident of history rather than geopolitical intention, lies apart from the rest of the state both culturally and geographically. This was only the 6th ‘Audubon’s’ Yellow-rumped ever recorded for Virginia. Something to work on, I guess.

Costa Rica Tops 700 Species on Global Big Day, October 19

Whatever the reason for getting involved with this massive day of birding, every GBD has been a success where literally thousands of species are found by thousands of birders. I have been able to do that in Costa Rica because literally hundreds of bird species can be accessed in a question of hours.

On My Way to 300

David Tomlinson wrote this week about how many and which species he has seen so far this year, and I can do the same. Especially since, to my surprise, it turns out that I am somehow picking up species faster this year, here in Michoacán, than in any other year. Fortunately, I have other 10,000 Birds writers from whom to steal ideas.

10,000 Birds goes eBirding – Part II

As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

My 10 Best Birds for 2021

I had only seen this species once here, in 2018. Virginia Warbler: The Virginia Warbler is a common species in the thorn forest of the Balsas River Basin, so I had seen it often. Extra points for this species’ rockin’ name. How did I miss that? And then, on February 1st, I suddenly saw dozens.
