No muddy trails : Muddy trails can’t be helped and you might have to walk on a few to see forest interior species but it’s nice to watch a well-stocked feeder when you get tired of the sticky, tropical mud. Although not orginally meant to see birds, it works wonders for seeing shy forest species.

On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

Lilac would have been a more appropriate name as this shrub was everywhere – seems to be an invasive species. The town is central to many other hotspots and it should be possible to get to more than 100 species in a day or two. I stayed in the Lillan cottage (internet boasts multiple ways of booking). Singing birds were everywhere.
