The main bird species visiting were Rufous-throated Honeyeaters , Zebra Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch. There does appear to be some respect from other bird species that may normally be a threat when they are all hot and thirsty, though. Finches tend to move in large flocks as they follow the food and water.
What this land-locked country lacks in endemic birds it more than makes up for in accessibility of tough species, numbers of birds and the overall wildlife experience. It is also home to the largest concentration of African Elephants on the planet and over 450 bird species. We are currently filming in Botswana.
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. The only other similar species is the White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike , but it is a much smaller species and the call is quite different.
We have observed huge flocks of Galahs there on previous visits and other times there are more bird species, but only one or two of each species. Walking out onto the bridge we soon observed a good mixture of other bird species. Brolga had come into drink and there were all three species of Ibis present. Magpie Goose.
And hey, speaking of empire – is there any more beautiful clap-back to European colonization than the fact that various species of psittacine, exploited and stolen and in so many cases extirpated by eager collectors, have now become noisily acclimatized free-flying life forms in the parks of Brooklyn and San Francisco and especially London?
For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?”
Even better, just a few meters away from the food vendors, it is not too crowded, and the palm trees attract a number of birds, including two species of parrots. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island). The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot.
This places feels almost as if herds of zebra and giraffe are just out of view. Well, the Latin name of the species is Tyrannus savana and what better savanna to photograph it in than the Rupununi? The Pakaraima mountains slowly materialize from the darkness, silently encircling the flatness of the savanna.
For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. The list was going to suffer due to the rain and the dispersal of so many of the bird species that we saw only three days earlier.
Still, I did manage to see a decent 65 species in 6 hours, and many of them stayed quite close to me, allowing for some nice photos. Black-and-white Warblers are usually dapper little birds, with their head-to-tail zebra stripes. The lovely Rufous-capped Warbler is something of a flagship species for this site.
Most of the ground-feeding seed-eaters fit solidly within the Hot Country species, with really large numbers of Stripe-headed Sparrows and Blue-black Grassquits. I was taking photos of that bright orange dragonfly, when the Zebra Butterfly photobombed me.). Ladder-backed Woodpeckers move freely between the two habitat zones.
There’s a little hint of white in the malar and throat too, which would seem to be a problem for the species Black- chinned Sparrow. As the old saying goes, “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras” This is not an easy bird, but it is expected. New Jersey mystery sparrow.
Not only were the doves flying in, but also Zebra Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch. Hopefully it would recover and had another of its species nearby. The sound of their wings as they all flew in was impressive. The header photo above shows the little bit of shade near the rocks.
It helps that there is a little bird hide almost on top of the hill, guarded by a Chinese lady and attracting a substantial number of species of birds and birders. The hide also attracts three species of minla – Blue-tailed Minla , Chestnut-tailed Minla and Red-tailed Minla.
During our three weeks of birding in a variety of habitats around Singapore we encountered three species of Munia. We also have the occasional visit from Long-tailed Finch and Zebra Finch and these two species are easily found around the Broome area. They nipped around the reeds and grasses close to one of the water bodies.
As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Due to a misunderstanding, this species is currently banned in Russia ( Swift Tern ).
While we are away in the Southern Highlands trying to keep warm and enjoying the bird species of that area I will share with you some of our local Broome birds. It is a lot less common for us to see Long-tailed Finches in our garden nowadays, though they were the predominant species of finch in our garden when we first moved in.
When going on an overseas birding trip, many serious birders want to leave the city as soon possible in search of endemic or rare species in remote wilderness. I mentioned a few weeks ago that we had added a branch at Ellendale dam and pleased several species of birds and this is also the case for a branch that we added to a local ephemeral lake. Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. Diamond Dove, Zebra Finch -leaping and Long-tailed Finch. Large flock of Zebra Finch. Yellow Chats.
There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. We also soon realised that it would be advisable to go to bed when the birdlife went quiet, because the bird species we had seen so far would be up with first light!
But Gotham’s many parks have some very suitable habitat for birds from the family Picidae and a birder in any borough of New York will generally find at least a couple of species during an average morning’s birding. If you are going to see any single species of woodpecker in New York City, this is likely the one you will see.
Also on the scene were a diversity of common doves and pigeons: Rock Pigeon , Spotted Dove , Zebra Dove , and Pink-necked Green Pigeon. I also pulled three species of tailorbird along with Asian Glossy Starling , Black-naped Oriole , and White-bellied Sea-Eagle en route. Common Redshanks and more.
It feels good to start a post with some truly attractive birds – such as two species of broadbills. Strangely, there do not seem to be many papers on this species. Common species like Lesser Goldinch , White-winged Dove , and Verdin quickly gave way to more rarified fare. The attraction of Southeastern Arizona in summer stems from the presence of certain highly range-restricted species. For example, in the shade of some palms, we discovered a female Blue-throated Hummingbird feeding a juvenile.
There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.
So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. I was planning a trip to South Africa, I had about five days to fill, I wanted to get a bunch of desert species (particularly the Springbok – not a bird) in a way that wasn’t too hard to reach from Johannesburg. And lo, it was good. I stumbled on Madikwe completely by accident. Springbok were one of my targets, and I got them!
Elephant The big – two species of elephant are now recognized as occuring in Africa, the smaller and more secretive Forest Elephant and the larger, more familiar African or Bush Elephant. The little – the two species of black Buffalo Weavers obtain their appellation from their dark coloration that resembles their fearsome namesake.
I already have a history of searches for this species. A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard, was a Ruddy Shelduck!
It is often useful to look at satellite images on Google Earth to see where there is suitable habitat for different bird species. When we decided to go to see what bird species there were in the undeveloped areas at Changi Business Park we encountered several species of bird that we did not observe anywhere else in Singapore.

The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris.
In this study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of juvenile zebra finches was allowed to interact with an adult. Adult zebra finches change their vocalizations when singing to juveniles. Another group simply heard adult songs played through a speaker.
Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.
It’s also a good place to pick up some African game if you’re on a quick trip, I saw Bontebok and Eland, two types of antelope, as well as Chamca Baboons, and if you’re lucky you can find Mountain Zebra here too. The deep reedbeds and pools hide many species, including some hard-to-see hippos! Boulders Beach.
At Cockatoo Lagoon you can take a short walk along the edge of the billabong and there are a variety of birds, but not necessarily large numbers of any particular species. We observed Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Masked Finch, Double-barred Finch, Star Finch and the rare Gouldian Finch … an uncommon red-headed male no less!

But my long wait to see antelope, zebras and everything in between is finally over. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. As has been the case every time I’ve been to Africa before, I won’t be there just for play.
That is why it is such amazingly awesome news that the British Birdwatching Fair raised £242,000 to help conserve a species that could become the first recorded bird extinction in mainland Africa. Here’s hoping the Liben Lark defies the odds and long graces the grassy plains of Ethiopia!
